They are designed for a specific task. Below you will find exactly the differences between the two categories and find out what you need to clean your bike.

Multifunctional preparations for cleaning the bicycle

The goal of this product group is to separate most stubborn dirt, mud and dust from the basic elements of the bicycle and its frame. Their goal is to facilitate cleaning as much as possible.

These types of bicycle cleaning preparations are not as strong as degreasers or specialty preparations for specific elements. Should be used on those parts of the bike where there is no greasy dirt or grease. They can be used, for example, on the steering wheel, wheels, tires, saddles and a bicycle frame.

Make sure that you have a brush set with you besides the cleaning product. The idea is to make sure that you reach all hard-to-reach places and get rid of all the dirt.

Degreasers and chain cleaners

These preparations are very helpful in getting rid of any dirt from the bike’s propulsion system. They ensure smooth operation of components (after lubrication).

Thanks to such measures your work will be easier and faster. By using special brushes, you can further improve your work.

Thanks to the lubricants used after cleaning the bike, you make sure that your bike will work without any problems. Lubricants play the main role when it comes to the condition of the bicycle.


Bicycle grease is used for these bicycle components, which are threaded together with cables, ball bearings and specific fixed elements (eg saddle fixing). The main reason for using bicycle grease is to reduce friction and reduce the likelihood of dirt accumulating in these places.

Bicycle grease is waterproof and has a stronger lubricant formula, adapted to the lubrication of components that you do not undress and which you often do not pay attention to.

Bicycle grease has two key but very different functions:

  • Ensure that all components are moving smoothly and are free of intrusive water
  • Ensure that the static metal-to-metal contact elements do not cause blockage

In the first situation, bicycle grease is used to provide the movable elements with the best possible mobility and smooth operation. You will notice it after the bearings work or saddle mounting. As in the case of changing gears or brake work. The bicycle grease should not be in outdoor areas, as it can attract dust and dirt.

In the second case, the bicycle grease protects the bicycle parts from „cold welding”. This can happen if the bike is exposed to the atmosphere. Thanks to the bicycle grease, the bicycle components will be protected against natural forces that cause corrosion.

The threads and saddle mounting are the most important static elements that must be lubricated with bicycle grease. These parts of the bicycle are in contact with the metal for a large part of time under pressure. It may cause them to jam and it is difficult to separate them. To prevent this, the ideal solution is to lubricate the screws before fixing them in the bike. In addition, it is also worth removing the saddle, clean the mounting and lubricate them before re-assembly.


The bike grease can be in three types: dry, wet and universal.

Dry lubricants

Their attitude is Teflon or wax; after application on the chain, they dry up and stick to the chain; they leave a layer of grease, which attracts less dust to a much lesser degree. That’s why we choose them if we go in dry and dusty surroundings.

Wet lubricants

These types of lubricants are usually stronger than dry greases and their basis is oil. They are designed to be resistant to mud and rain. They provide a „wet” layer of lubrication on moving parts of the bicycle, even if the agent is used a lot.

It would be best if this grease was used only in such conditions. Wet lubricants are ideal for winter driving. However, after finishing it, you should clean the bike and use a dry lubricant.

Universal greases

As the name suggests, these are lubricants intended for use in all conditions. The disadvantage of this type of products is that they are not intended for extreme weather conditions (eg high humidity or dry climate).
