When spending a lot of time cycling, you need to be able to use every second. Thanks to the regular care of the bike, you will be able to keep it in perfect condition, and consequently the rides will be just joy. You can save a lot if you keep the bike yourself, without the help of a specialist. It is a skill that is difficult to judge. However, it is not as difficult as it seems. All you need is a little bit of technology and knowledge. Thanks to this you can cope with the bicycle care in a short time.
All you have to do is go to the advice and tips to keep your bike in perfect condition.
The first step in the care process is to thoroughly wash your bike. Doing it regularly can extend the life of your bike and improve its performance. To wash your bike, you need a biodegradable agent, a sponge, an old toothbrush and a towel. Using them, you will clean everything: saddle, brakes, pedals, derailleurs, chain and frame. You do not need to use a lot of water, just a fine mist or gentle spraying. It is enough to rinse the soap that remained on the bike after cleaning. You should pull the saddle before cleaning, and before re-assembly, use a small amount of bicycle lubricant.
One of the most important elements of the bicycle are the brakes. It is important to check that they are in good condition. A good brake setting is responsible for good cycling control or lack of it, which can result in serious injury. It is important to regularly check the condition of the brakes, so that the bike will run smoothly.
Start by checking the brake pads, a small rubber, rectangular surface that presses against the wheel or disk rim. Brake pads tend to over-wear with time, so they need to be replaced. You can use the flashlight to make it easier to check the condition of the brakes and determine if they are so worn out that they need to be replaced. If you only need to adapt, you only have to press them down using a special part. If you want to bring them closer to the disk, tighten the screws, if the reverse, loosen them.
It is important that there is no dirt or oil on the surface of the brakes and pads. Dirty brakes wear out faster.
Wheels and spokes affect the smooth operation and stability of the bicycle. They keep the tires in the right place when you ride a bike. Having well-fitted tires protects you against the ingress of dirt.
To check the wheels, turn the bike over and spin the wheel. Both wheels should spin without shaking. If the wheel rim is distorted, you can adjust it using the key. If you are dealing with a more serious damage, you can replace it with a new one.
When cycling, you must also check that the nuts and bolts are not loose. Remember, however, not to over tighten them, as this may damage the bicycle, which will affect the quality of the ride.
The drive system includes: chain, pedals and derailleurs. The drive system transfers the power generated by the strength of our legs to the wheel at the back of the bike. Thanks to this, the bike moves. It is necessary to take care of him, so that the ride will take place without a problem.
You will need help when checking the drive system. Lift the rear wheel of the bike and twist it as you did in step one. Check that the wheel spins well on each gear. Check also the wheels on which the chain rests, the chain itself and the derailleur. See if you can not see signs of wear, depressions, missing teeth or scratches on them. If one of the parts looks worn, it’s better to replace it.
This is the last and most important step in the bicycle care process. Good lubrication of the bicycle is the key to smooth and pleasant ride. The use of grease also helps to protect the bicycle from corrosion. Lubricating the bicycle, and especially its propulsion system, is essential if you want your bike to work without a problem. Thanks to this, you will also protect your bike by collecting dirt and dust. The best anti-corrosion agent is WD-40 . It is the most frequently chosen bicycle lubricant and corrosion protection for over 60 years.
Apply WD-40 grease to the chain when pedaling in the counterclockwise direction. WD-40 will act as a corrosion inhibiting agent. Also lubricate the derailleurs and brake levers. Do not leave any traces of grease. Before applying WD-40 , remember to remove all rust. You can get rid of it using a wire brush. If any part is too corroded, it is better to replace it.
Your bike is ready for a ride!
