A good maintenance of the garage door will ensure safety and convenience, while the unabated door will make life difficult and may pose serious risks.

That’s why it’s so important to maintain it and maintain it in the best possible condition for a long time. Maintaining a garage door in standby mode for undisturbed operation requires only a small annual maintenance. Below are some simple tips for garage door maintenance that will keep them in a functional condition, silent and uninterrupted, and eliminate any problems associated with them.

Maintenance of the garage door

The following tips for garage door maintenance will help keep them in good condition for a long time.

Step 1 Cleaning the garage door

The first step in the maintenance of the door is cleaning them. This should be done at least 1x a year. Use a soft cloth or sponge to clean the door with a suitable cleaning agent. Gently wipe away all dirt and debris from the door and then rinse it with a hose with water. If the door is made of wood – clean it with a soft, clean and dry cloth.

Wooden doors may require staining or re-painting, depending on the condition. It is necessary to check the garage door once a year in order to detect any spots that require staining or painting. It depends on the climatic conditions prevailing at the place of use and the quality of the wood used. Always clean the inner and outer surfaces for best results.

Step 2 Checking the garage door

The next step in the maintenance of the garage door is to check if they are working safely. Carefully check the condition of the hinges, brackets, cables, rails and rollers. These activities and necessary adjustments are to be carried out every 3 months. Check that the bolts and screws are tight. Check that parts are undamaged or worn out and replace as needed, as leaving them in a faulty condition can cause a serious accident. Check if the door is balanced. For this purpose:

  • Disconnect the power supply wires of the door
  • Switch off the opening mechanism. To do this, pull the handle and pull the cable out of the central guide
  • Raise the door by hand to the level of the hips and slowly release. If the door is raised or falling – it means that it is unbalanced and should be set. In this case, the intervention of the service specialist is necessary. If the door remains in place – it means that it is balanced. You can go to the next step.

Step 3 Lubricating the garage door

Lubricating garage doors is one of the most important maintenance activities. The most important is finding the right lubricant and proper lubrication for long-lasting operation.

Lubrication is crucial. Proper lubrication ensures uninterrupted and quiet operation of the garage door. Every 3 months, lubricate all screws, hinges, bearings and springs with a suitable lubricant, eg WD-40.

WD-40 is the most used lubricant for garage doors for over 60 years. It can easily be applied by spraying on hinges, springs and other door elements. Provides the lubrication necessary for the proper operation of the garage door. Lubricant WD-40 is best suited for doors made of metal. The special feature of this lubricant is that WD-40 not only provides lubrication to the garage doors, but also creates a coating that protects metal surfaces against corrosion. Thanks to this, it protects the garage door from moisture. You can spray the garage door with WD-40 alone or order this work to a specialist.

  • Start spraying from the guides. Clean the guides with a cloth and WD-40 covers .
  • Then apply the agent on the door springs. Check beforehand that they are clean.
  • Lubricate the hinge pins. DO NOT LUBRICATE HINGES OF PLASTIC! It may cause them to burst.
  • Lubricate bearings and rollers. Be careful not to use too much grease – otherwise the grease may drip onto the passing car.
  • You can also lubricate the lock of the garage door with the same lubricant. This will make it easier to open and close the lock.

The maintenance of the garage door not only ensures their long-lasting work, but also guarantees the safety of you and your family. The garage door must be maintained min. once a year. The above steps will ensure proper maintenance of the garage door.
