Lubricating the hinges – how to do it?

Never underestimate the annoying potential of hinges in the door, because creaking can really get you teased. After years of use, dirt and dust on the hinges can not be avoided. This causes the metal hinges to wear out faster, rust, and, as a result, they creak. You can, however, wash and lubricate the hinges, and thus easily get rid of this annoying sound. It will not take you much time and you do not need many tools.

Lubrication of hinges

Step 1

Buy the right grease. You need to make sure that it penetrates easily through dirt, grease and dust and penetrates into areas where lubrication is needed. It is important to choose the preparation in the straw package, so that the application will be more precise. In this situation, the WD-40 multifunctional works perfectly because it has a movable straw. Go to the store and check what preparations are available. In addition to WD-40, you can also use:

  • White lithium grease: It is an ideal agent, additionally resistant to dust accumulation. It is mainly used for the lubrication of car parts, where it works just as well as in other situations. You can try WD-40 Specialist White Lithium Grease.

  • There are many oils usually used in the kitchen, which can also be used in this situation. These are, for example: coconut oil, cocoa oil or olive oil. If your door moves easily but tends to squeak, using this type of oil should be enough. This method, however, has a minus – using oil will attract dust and dirt. Therefore, they are considered less effective in the long term than other lubricants.

Step 2

You must locate the hinge pin. Each hinge in the door consists of a hinge and a pin that connects two parts of the hinge. Find the oval pin between the two hinge plates. She is responsible for keeping them together. To effectively lubricate the hinge, the pin must be removed.

Step 3

You have to pull the pin. First, open the door and start pulling out the pin. Sometimes it is enough to force the hands to do it, but quite often it turns out that you will need a tool for that. Take the pliers, grab the pin and twist it clockwise to get it out. It may happen that in the place where the pin is located so much rust has accumulated that it will be very difficult to remove it. If you are struggling with this, help yourself with a hammer, screwdriver and WD-40.

Step 4

Now you have to wash the pin and lubricate it with the medium you previously selected. After removing the pin, use a paper towel or some cloth to clean the pin and tile hinges of dirt and grease. If there is rust on them, you can use sandpaper for a better effect. After cleaning the hinge elements, cover them with grease.

Step 5

Now you have to fold the hinge again. Insert the bolt in its place and make sure it comes in exactly.

Step 6

After reinstalling the hinge, check the door. Open and close them several times to ensure that the lubricant has thoroughly penetrated the mechanism inside the hinge. If the squeaking still does not disappear, repeat the process until it disappears.

Step 7

Take a paper towel or other disposable cloth to clean up. Make sure you have cleaned up dirt and grease, and any grease that may have dripped during lubrication.

Removing the pin that began to stick

Step 1

Use WD-40 to dip the hinges in it. If you find it difficult to remove the pin, cover it with any penetrating grease (WD-40 will be perfect) for about 12 hours before trying to pull it out again. Use a lot of preparation to completely cover the hinge. You can use a screwdriver and a hammer to remove the pin using force. However, if there is a large amount of rust on it, it may end up destroying the door or breaking the hinge, which will cause another problem.

Step 2

Use a screwdriver to gently hit the pin. After leaving the preparation penetrating long enough, use the tip of the screwdriver to hit the pin and thus remove it. Typically, this method works best. A screwdriver or other object should be small enough to push out the pin. It can be, for example, a pencil or a pen, but also any other tool that will be thin enough.

Step 3

Repair the bolt if necessary. Take the pin and put it on an even surface. Check for signs of wear. It’s good to spend some time before we start cleaning and reassembling. Thanks to this the door will not squeak. If the pin is bent, you can try to straighten it by placing it on a hard surface and hitting it with a hammer to give it its original shape. It will also be useful to use sandpaper to get rid of traces of rust, which will help in the proper mounting of the pin.
